What happened
L'Estrille du Vieux-Bruxelles stood in the Rue de Rollebeek, the cobbled slope that runs from the Place du Grand Sablon down towards the Marolles, and the year on its name was 1587. The Brussels regional heritage inventory is more cautious than that: its record for numbers 7 and 9, researched in 2016, describes two small traditional houses of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with a larger building behind them in the courtyard, gives the trade no date at all, and calls number 7 the ancienne auberge — the former inn — beside photographs of the sign taken in 1980. The ensemble has been a protected monument since 23 October 2003. What the companies register adds is the ending. Five businesses have traded at number 7 under the Estrille name and all five are stopped: the last of them, registered there from 20 March 1996, ceased on 14 March 2022, and the company of the name incorporated in 1981 has been in voluntary liquidation since February 1988 and struck off since 2013 for filing no accounts. Le Vertigo, a restaurant and cocktail bar registered as cafés and bars and as a dancing, has held the address since 1 October 2016; its own English page tells visitors it welcomes them behind L'Estrille du Vieux Bruxelles, which it calls the city's oldest inn.
What is there now
Le Vertigo, a restaurant and cocktail bar with live music, which has held the registration at Rue de Rollebeek 7-9 since October 2016. The two little houses stand, protected since 2003, with the Estrille's name still on the wall behind the bar's own.
