What happened
Büchenbach is a village outside Pegnitz, in the brewing country of Franconian Switzerland, and until the summer of 2025 it had a brewery, a bakery and an inn under one roof. The Franconian press records the Herold family holding brewing, serving and baking rights there from 1568 — four hundred and fifty-seven years, as the Nordbayerischer Kurier counted them at the end. The last generation kept all three trades going: bread and sausage made in the house, fried potatoes from the family's own ground, and the dark Büchenbacher Beck'n brewed over a wood fire. Gisela Herold and Regina Haas had taken the business on from their father Hans about five years before the end. In February 2025 they told inFranken they would shut for good on 31 August. The reason was not a want of custom — the rooms were full to the last week of trade — but that the work could no longer be staffed: when the inn filled the two of them could not keep up, cover for illness had gone, and casual help was not to be found. Drinkers came from across Franconia for the last night, and a petition to keep the house open changed nothing.
What is there now
Shut, and nothing has replaced it. The Herolds stopped brewing, baking and serving on 31 August 2025, no successor, tenant or buyer has been reported in the Franconian press since, and the brewery's own website no longer answers. The clearest measure of the loss is on the Bierquellen-Wanderweg, the beer-springs walk between Leups and Lindenhardt: the regional tourist board has amended its page to say that since Büchenbach went dark, walkers can stop at three brewery inns rather than four.
