What happened
Bar Luiz opened in Rio on 3 January 1887 as Zum Schlauch — "at the hose" — named for the coiled pipe sunk in ice that chilled the draught beer, and kept by a German, Jacob Wendling. It changed its name whenever Brazil changed its mind about Germans: Zum Alten Jacob in 1901, then Bar Adolph in 1915 when the language laws came in. In 1942 students who had not stopped to think about which Adolph attacked the place, and the owner took Brazilian nationality and renamed it Bar Luiz. It moved twice, to Rua da Assembleia 105 and then in 1927 to Rua da Carioca 39, where it stayed for the rest of its life and where the city listed it in 2011 as cultural heritage under its register of traditional bars. Bankruptcy was declared in 2022, and the doors shut on 135 years of it.
What is there now
Empty, and possibly not for good. The name was bought at auction in October 2023 by the businessman behind the Belmonte chain, who said he intended to reopen Bar Luiz on Rua da Carioca. Nothing traced since says the doors have opened. The building keeps its listing as cultural heritage of the city either way.
